Session 1: Why Go?
Why Go?
Before you pack your bags, it's worth asking: Why are you going on this trip? Your motivation matters more than your itinerary. Let's explore God's heart for the nations and align our hearts with His.
Your Starting Point
What made you decide to go on this mission trip? Be honest—there are no wrong answers.
God's Heart for the Nations
1The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”Genesis 12:1-3 · NIV
From the very beginning, God's plan was to bless all nations through Abraham's descendants. This isn't just an Old Testament idea—it's the heartbeat of Scripture. God has always been on mission, and He invites us to join Him.
18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”Matthew 28:18-20 · NIV
Jesus' final command was to "go and make disciples of all nations." This Great Commission isn't optional for some Christians—it's the marching orders for all of us. You're stepping into a story that's been unfolding for thousands of years.
How does knowing this biblical foundation change or confirm your reasons for going?
It's Not About You
Here's a potentially uncomfortable truth: Mission trips aren't primarily about your personal growth, your adventure, or your Instagram content. They're about God's glory and others' good. Your growth is a wonderful byproduct, but it's not the main point.
The people you'll meet aren't projects to be completed—they're image-bearers of God with their own stories, struggles, and gifts. You're going to learn from them as much as (probably more than) you'll teach them.
What would it look like to make this trip truly about serving others rather than having an experience?
Prayer
Ask God to purify your motives. Ask Him to give you His heart for the people you'll serve. Pray that your trip would bring glory to Him above all else—not to you, not to your church, not to the organization. Just Him.
