Week 1: The Problem - Sin and Separation

The Problem: Sin and Separation

Before we can truly appreciate the good news of Jesus, we need to understand the bad news. This isn't meant to make you feel terrible. It's meant to help you understand why you needed a Savior in the first place. And here's the encouraging part: you're not alone. Every human being who has ever lived has faced this same problem.

What Is Sin?

When most people hear the word "sin," they think of the big stuff: murder, stealing, lying. But the Bible defines sin much more broadly. The Greek word for sin literally means "to miss the mark": like an arrow that doesn't hit the target.

23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,Romans 3:23 · NIV

Sin isn't just doing bad things. It's falling short of God's perfect standard. It's putting ourselves in the place that belongs only to God. Every time we choose our way over God's way, we miss the mark.

Think about it this way: even our "good" is tainted by selfish motives. We help someone but want recognition. We give but want to feel good about ourselves. Our best efforts still fall short of perfect love, perfect purity, perfect obedience.

Why Does It Matter?

Sin matters because it creates a barrier between us and God. God is holy: completely pure, completely good. Sin is the opposite of His nature. The two cannot coexist.

2But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.Isaiah 59:2 · NIV

This separation has consequences. The Bible is blunt about it:

23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 6:23 · NIV

Physical death, spiritual death, eternal separation from God. That's the natural result of sin. It's not that God is cruel. It's that sin, by its very nature, leads to death and destruction.

Can I Fix It Myself?

Here's where many people get stuck. They think: "If I just try harder, do more good things, become a better person. I can fix this." But the Bible says no amount of good works can bridge the gap. We cannot save ourselves.

8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast.Ephesians 2:8-9 · NIV

Imagine trying to jump across the Grand Canyon. Some people might jump farther than others, but nobody is making it to the other side. The gap is too wide. That's our situation with God. Some people are "more moral" than others, but everyone falls short.

Discussion Questions

1. Before today, how would you have defined sin?

2. Have you ever felt distant from God or like something was missing in your life?

3. Why do you think it's hard for people to admit they can't save themselves?
